USD/JPY Continues to Dominate Bullish Momentum

137
USD/JPY opened the new week with a bullish gap, reflecting the strengthening of the US Dollar (USD) triggered by the failure of diplomacy in the Middle East.

Although the price is currently stuck just below the psychological level of 160.00, the fundamentals indicate buyer dominance for three consecutive days.

✅ Key Catalysts: US Naval Blockade & Negotiation Failure
Market sentiment returned to "high alert" mode after negative developments over the weekend:

- Strait of Hormuz Blockade: President Donald Trump's announcement that the US Navy would begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz has sparked fears of a massive disruption to global energy supplies. As a net energy importer, Japan's economy is considered the most vulnerable, which automatically weighed on the Yen (JPY).

- Islamabad Standoff: 21 hours of intensive negotiations between the US and Iran ended without an agreement. This reinforces the USD's status as a major reserve currency at a time of heightened uncertainty.

- Energy & JGB Shocks: The surge in crude oil prices triggered a rise in Japanese government bond (JGB) yields, but instead of supporting the JPY, this highlighted the Japanese economy's vulnerability to imported inflation driven by external energy shocks.

✅ Monetary Policy: More Hawkish Fed Expectations
- The surge in US inflation (CPI) data in March has reshaped interest rate expectations:

- Higher for Longer: Investors are now pricing in a more hawkish stance from the Fed to combat energy inflation. The prospect of high interest rates in the US continues to widen the yield spread with Japan, providing fundamental support for USD/JPY.

- Intervention Alert: The only factor holding USD/JPY back from exploding above 160.00 is the fear of physical intervention from the Japanese Ministry of Finance (MoF). Speculation that authorities will "step into the market" is making traders hesitant to place overly aggressive bullish bets at current levels.

✅ Key Levels to Watch
- Psychological Resistance (160.00): A "red line" level for Japanese authorities. A sustained break above this level could trigger significant intervention.

- Next Upward Target (160.50 - 161.00): If the market ignores the threat of intervention due to geopolitical panic.

- Nearest Support (159.20): The daily gap-filling area.

- Critical Support (158.00): A three-week low. A break below this level is needed to ease the current bullish pressure.
