Bias: Bullish underlying, but digesting a sharp spike, so expect two-way chop short term. Key driver: a 9-3 Fed hold plus a fresh wave of Iran strikes on US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
The Setup
Both scenarios from my last post basically happened at once. The Fed held at 3.50 to 3.75 percent like the majority expected, but the vote came in 9 to 3, one dissent worse than the 10 to 2 that was being flagged, with Hammack, Kashkari, and Logan all pushing for a hike. That's the first time since 2016 three members have dissented together in the same hawkish direction. At the same time, the pause I mentioned last update didn't hold, Iran hit US forces across the Persian Gulf and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia again. Gold took both pieces of news and ran higher, spiking from the 4,000 area up to about 4,115 to 4,117 as rate relief and fresh safe haven demand hit together. Since that spike it's pulled back to around 4,050 to 4,080, which is normal digestion after a move that fast.
🔍 Technical Read
- Structure: a sharp low near 4,000, actually touching a nine month low closer to 3,975 to 3,995 intraday, followed by an explosive reversal to 4,115 to 4,117 on the decision and the Iran headlines.
- Current position: pulling back from that spike, sitting around 4,050 to 4,080, still well above the pre FOMC lows.
- What the pullback means: normal profit taking after a fast move, not necessarily a reversal. The 4,090 to 4,100 zone that rejected price twice before is now the level to watch on any bounce attempt.
- Support if this keeps fading: 4,018 to 4,025 first, the same shelf from the past week, then 4,000 as the psychological floor.
- Bigger picture resistance: the 4,172 swing high from last week, still untested since the reversal began.
📰 Fundamental Backdrop
- The Fed held 9 to 3, with three regional presidents dissenting in favor of a hike, the first unified three way hawkish dissent since September 2016. The rate itself didn't move, and that relief is a big part of why gold rallied despite the hawkish optics.
- Warsh kept the statement shorter than usual and avoided leaning into forward guidance, consistent with how he's approached the role since taking over.
- The bigger surprise came from the Middle East, not the Fed. Iran launched a fresh round of attacks on US forces across the Persian Gulf and on energy infrastructure inside Saudi Arabia, undoing the pause that had been holding into the decision.
- Today adds Q2 GDP, Core PCE, and jobless claims to the calendar, all releasing within hours of each other. PCE especially matters since it's the inflation gauge the Fed actually targets, and a hot print could revive the same hike bets the hold just eased.
- Net effect: two separate bullish drivers, rate relief and safe haven demand, landed on the same day. That's part of why the reaction was so sharp, and also why some give back afterward isn't surprising.
🎯 Levels That Matter
- Post FOMC spike high: 4,115 to 4,117
- Bigger picture resistance: 4,172
- Current zone: 4,050 to 4,080
- Key support: 4,018 to 4,025
- Nine month low, deeper support: 3,975 to 4,000
🔀 Scenario Watch
- Digestion then continuation, bullish: the pullback from 4,117 is just profit taking, PCE comes in soft or in line, and gold holds above 4,018 to 4,025 before pushing back at 4,090 to 4,100 and eventually 4,172.
- Hot PCE reopens the hike debate, bearish: a Core PCE print above forecast revives the same rate hike fear that was capping gold before the decision, pressuring price back toward 4,018 and possibly 4,000.
- Iran situation escalates further, bullish regardless of data: if the new strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure lead to actual supply disruption or a broader response, safe haven demand could override whatever the data says today, similar to what happened yesterday.
💭 My Take
Yesterday was genuinely rare, a hawkish feeling vote and a fresh war escalation both landing at once, and gold still went up, which tells you the rate relief and safe haven bid together outweighed the hawkish optics. Today's data, especially PCE, is the next real test of whether that holds. I'd watch how price behaves around 4,050 to 4,080 through the data releases before assuming the pullback is over or the rally continues, this is exactly the kind of session where the first move on the headline gets faded.
