Broker positions: analyze your live option trades in Strategy builder

Options strategy builder can load the option positions you already hold with your broker, so you can review their risk profile and run scenario analysis on real trades — not just on hypothetical ones.

Suppose you are holding a call spread on Apple that expires in December. You want to know how the position will look in a week if the stock does not move, or what happens to it if implied volatility drops. Instead of recreating the legs by hand, you can connect your broker, let the position load into Strategy builder automatically, and analyze it on the payoff diagram.

Connected positions are read-only: they always reflect what is actually open at your broker. To experiment with them, you make a copy and work on that copy.

Connecting a broker

Open the Strategy builder tab. Above the list of strategies, next to Add strategy, click the Connect broker button.

A window with the list of available brokers opens. Choose the broker where your option positions are held, then sign in and authorize the connection. If you want to explore the workflow without a live account, select Paper Trading, the brokerage simulator by TradingView.

Once the connection is established, the broker's logo appears next to Add strategy, and your open option positions start loading into My strategies.

Loaded positions appear in the My strategies panel, grouped by underlying instrument alongside the strategies you have built yourself.

Broker positions are read-only. The strike, expiration, side, size, and price fields cannot be edited, and legs cannot be added or removed — the strategy card mirrors the position exactly as it exists at your broker.

Copying a strategy for analysis

To modify a broker position or test scenarios on it, make a copy of it. Click the copy icon in the top-right corner of the strategy card. In the Make copy of strategy window, enter a name for the new strategy and click Make copy.

The copy appears in My strategies as a regular strategy. It is fully editable and completely independent from your broker: any change you make to it affects the analysis only and never your actual position.

With a copy you can, for example:

  • Change strikes and expirations to compare alternative versions of the trade.
  • Adjust position size to see how the risk profile scales.
