US Treasuries Seesaw Lower, Yield Curve Steepens
It has been extremely volatile, choppy in US Tsys Thur. Prices started out mostly higher and curve continued in steepening mode. Market had muted reaction to weekly jobless claims but reacted strongly to later data. ISM offered mixed messages on growth, employment and inflation. It appears, tho, that Tsys are losing some of their safe haven bid, lowering odds of Fed ease any time soon and have returned focus to inflation and long end supply pressures. More importantly, it also appears that just before ISM markets got a sense there was progress with China on trade talks. So, after being mostly higher on day earlier, Tsys swung around and are all lower at this time. Curve is steeper but off steepest levels. 2Y yield opened ~3.58% vs 3.62% settle and is now ~3.66%. 10Y opened ~4.14% vs 4.17% settle and is now ~4.21%. 30Y opened unch ~ 4.67% and is now ~4.73%. Stocks all higher while gold continues to pull back.
