It operates through the following segments: Motor Retail and Distribution, Car Hire, and Financial Services. The Motor Retail and Distribution segment operates as a free-standing business under the dealerships that include Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Honda, Ford, Mazda, General Motors, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Toyota, Suzuki, Investment Cars, Infiniti, Renault and Morris Garages, and others. The Car Hire segment manages its business through the First Car Rental, which comprises vehicles ranging from no-frills models to top-of-the-range luxury cars that are available for short- and long-term hire. The Financial Services segment provides insurance and underwriting facilities in respect of products sold in tandem with the sale of new and used vehicles. The Other segment includes the supply and installation of workshop lifting, lubrication and diagnostic equipment, and the supply of waterless car wash systems. The company was founded by Maldwyn Zimmerman and Jebb D. McIntosh in 1976 and is headquartered in Umhlanga Ridge, South Africa.
