It is the expected position by selling with the expectation that the value of a good or financial instrument will decrease at a future date. A short position is taken with the expectation that the price will decrease. When a short positioned instrument, stock or commodity loses value, a profit is made and it is possible to buy the relevant instrument at a low price afterwards. It is heavily used in spot and futures derivatives markets.
